Crushed Ankle and Rs 2 Lakh Bill: Bengaluru Woman's Pothole Ordeal
In a fresh reminder of the hazards posed by poorly maintained roads in Bengaluru, a woman was left with a crushed ankle and a medical bill of nearly Rs 2 lakh after her scooter hit a pothole on a busy stretch of Varthur Road. The accident, which occurred on August 20, has drawn renewed attention to the condition of civic infrastructure in India's technology capital.
Aishani Khanna, a private sector employee, was riding to her office that afternoon when she lost control of her two-wheeler after striking a water-filled pothole near Nexus Mall on Whitefield-Varthur Road. "It was about noon and raining pretty hard. I was on my two-wheeler and didn't see a pothole. I was up in the air for two or three seconds. I fell, and the scooter fell on me," she narrated.
The fall left her with seven or eight deep cuts and abrasions on her left ankle, which required emergency plastic surgery. She remained hospitalised for five days. The total cost of treatment came to Rs 1.97 lakh. Khanna said she may need a second operation depending on how her ankle heals.
Sharing her ordeal on social media platform X, Khanna urged authorities to address the condition of the roads. "A hidden pothole on Varthur Road cost me a crushed ankle, emergency plastic surgery, 5 days in hospital, and Rs 1.97L. This could happen to ANY of us tomorrow. Fix the roads now," she wrote.
Beyond the physical injury, Khanna spoke of the mental and financial toll of the incident. "It's not just the physical trauma that I went through. It was a lot of mental trauma and financial burden because it was very uncalled for," she said.
A resident of Bengaluru for three decades, Khanna expressed disappointment over the worsening state of the city's roads. "There is absolutely no road, just potholes," she said, appealing to the government to ensure better infrastructure.
The accident is the latest in a series of incidents involving potholes in Bengaluru. The city, often referred to as the Silicon Valley of India, has faced persistent criticism over road conditions and traffic management. Earlier this year, a man narrowly escaped being run over by a tanker after his motorcycle hit a pothole. The issue has also drawn comments from public representatives; state minister D.K. Shivakumar has repeatedly assured citizens that repair work is ongoing.
However, motorists and pedestrians continue to bear the cost of neglected infrastructure, both financially and physically. In Khanna's case, a routine commute turned into a hospital stay and a hefty medical bill. Her call to "fix the roads now" echoes the concerns of many residents who navigate the city's uneven surfaces every day.
The incident also raises broader questions about accountability for civic maintenance and the need for prompt action to prevent similar accidents. As urban areas expand and road usage increases, ensuring safe, well-maintained roads remains a pressing priority for local administrations across the country.
