Centre launches online process to renounce OCI registration: Steps, fees, timeline

The Ministry of Home Affairs has introduced an online facility for Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders to voluntarily renounce their registration. The service, part of the new e-OCI system launched under the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2026, aims to digitise several OCI services and reduce paperwork.

It is important to clarify that renouncing OCI registration is distinct from giving up Indian citizenship. OCI cardholders are foreign nationals who hold the citizenship of another country. The OCI card grants them certain lifelong benefits, including multiple-entry visa-free travel and residency in India. Surrendering these privileges does not affect the individual's foreign citizenship or any claims to Indian citizenship, which they do not hold.

Here is a step-by-step guide to renounce OCI registration online:

Step 1: Access the e-OCI portal
Visit the official e-OCI website (ociservices.gov.in) and log in using your existing credentials. If you do not have an account, you will need to register first.

Step 2: Select the renunciation service
From the dashboard, choose the option for “Renunciation of OCI Registration”. You will be directed to a form that must be filled accurately.

Step 3: Fill in the required details
Provide personal information including your OCI card number, passport number, date of birth, and reason for renunciation. Upload scanned copies of your OCI card and passport as specified.

Step 4: Pay the fee
The fee for renunciation is set at Rs. 500 (or equivalent in foreign currency) plus applicable service charges. Payment can be made online via credit/debit card, net banking, or other available methods.

Step 5: Submit and track application
After submission, you will receive an acknowledgement number. You can track the status of your application online. The processing timeline is typically 30 to 60 days from the date of submission, depending on the completeness of documents and verification.

Documents required:
- Original OCI card (to be surrendered after approval)
- Copy of valid passport
- Recent passport-size photograph
- Proof of renunciation fee payment

What happens after renunciation?
Once the application is approved, the OCI registration is cancelled. The cardholder must surrender the physical OCI card to the Indian Mission or Post where they applied. They will then receive a surrender certificate. After renunciation, the individual loses all OCI benefits, including visa-free travel to India. They would need to apply for a regular visa for any future visits.

For any queries, applicants can contact the OCI helpdesk via the portal or visit the nearest Indian embassy or consulate. The government has also provided a detailed FAQ section on the e-OCI website.

This digitised process is expected to make renunciation simpler and quicker, eliminating the need for multiple physical visits to government offices.
