BSP Chief Mayawati Accuses Opposition of Using Dalit Groups to Mislead Voters
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati on Saturday alleged that opposition parties are using certain Dalit organisations to mislead the Bahujan community ahead of upcoming elections. In a statement on X, she accused these groups of making baseless promises and engaging in false propaganda to serve their political interests.
Mayawati described recent protests and road blockades as political gimmicks. She contrasted the BSP's approach, stating that her party does not believe in demonstrations, vandalism, or violence. 'The BSP is the only Ambedkarite party in the country completely free from such electoral gimmicks and is dedicated to the welfare of the entire society, especially the poor, labourers, and oppressed,' she wrote.
She highlighted the BSP's record in Uttar Pradesh, where it formed governments four times, claiming they delivered comprehensive public welfare and maintained rule of law. Mayawati also criticised opposition parties and affiliated Dalit organisations for what she called 'crocodile tears' and 'chameleon-like' behaviour for narrow interests.
Her comments come after the murder of 20-year-old student Lalita Gautam in Meerut district. Her body was found in a sugarcane field. Police arrested her alleged boyfriend Ankush, who later obtained bail. Dalit groups and the victim's family alleged involvement of others and protested on July 8 and 9, demanding a fresh investigation.
Mayawati warned that opposition parties are using 'guns on the shoulders of Dalit organisations and people with a slave mentality' to oppose the BSP and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar's movement. She urged all sections of society, especially Dalits, to remain vigilant so that 'the evil intentions of opponents do not succeed.'
The BSP chief expressed concern that poor, labourers, and unemployed youth might become victims of government oppression when they take to the streets to raise issues. She reiterated her party's commitment to 'social change and economic upliftment' through the path shown by leaders like Jyotiba Phule, Narayana Guru, and Ambedkar.
