Suvendu's 'stay off streets' remark sparks row; Mamata calls it threat to democracy

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday suggested that his predecessor Mamata Banerjee should confine herself to social media, saying he would ensure she does not take to the streets. Addressing a press conference at the State Secretariat, Mr. Adhikari said, “Remain active on Facebook. You will not have to go out on the streets anymore. I will also make arrangements so that you cannot go out on the streets.”

Hours earlier, Ms. Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) chairperson, had reiterated that she would not be pushed into political retirement. Reacting to Mr. Adhikari's remarks, she described them as a direct threat. In a post on X, she wrote, “A NEW LOW in Indian politics! @SuvenduWB, while seated in a government office, has brazenly THREATENED me, publicly declaring that he will ensure I cannot even leave my home. I call upon the Hon’ble President of India, the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, and the people of India: Is this the India envisioned by our Constitution?” Several TMC leaders came out in support of Ms. Banerjee, criticising the Chief Minister's statement.

The exchange comes months after the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, in which the BJP secured a decisive majority with 207 seats in the 294-member House. Ms. Banerjee, known for her history as a street-level organiser, has largely stayed away from public rallies since the defeat. On the few occasions she attempted to hold public meetings, the response was reportedly muted.

Mr. Adhikari cited two incidents to criticise Ms. Banerjee's recent public engagements — the protests over the rape and murder of a minor in Baruipur and the custodial death of a TMC supporter in Halisahar. He claimed she failed to mobilise people on both occasions.

The remark, however, carries broader political significance. Despite the TMC's worst electoral setback, with many of its MPs and MLAs switching allegiance to the BJP, Ms. Banerjee remains the principal Opposition figure in the State. Her ability to lead street protests has historically been a key part of her political identity, and Mr. Adhikari's comment has been interpreted as an attempt to limit that avenue.

The rivalry between the two leaders is long-standing. Mr. Adhikari, a former close aide of Ms. Banerjee, defeated her directly in Nandigram during the 2021 Assembly elections by a margin of 1,956 votes. In the 2026 elections, he won again from Bhabanipur by a margin of 15,065 votes. Political observers suggest that the contest between the two could continue to shape West Bengal politics in the coming years.

The new BJP government, led by Mr. Adhikari, faces its own challenges. It has adopted cash transfer schemes similar to those used by the previous TMC government. Protests by women over the denial of promised cash incentives under the Annapurna Bhandar scheme have emerged as a point of tension. Ms. Banerjee has sought to use such grievances to rebuild her credibility and revive her party's fortunes.

Additionally, there is reported unease among some leaders from minority communities who left the TMC to join the BJP. This could provide an opening for the TMC to regain support. For Mr. Adhikari, the question is how long the former Chief Minister can be effectively kept from direct public engagement. For Ms. Banerjee, the challenge is to translate her political longevity into meaningful opposition within the constitutional framework.
