British PM Elevates Indian-Origin AI Minister Kanishka Narayan to Cabinet
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has appointed Kanishka Narayan, the Indian-origin Minister for Artificial Intelligence, to the Cabinet. The decision came within hours of Mr. Burnham taking office at 10 Downing Street after being invited to form a government by King Charles on Monday, July 20, 2026. Mr. Narayan, who previously served as a junior minister under former Prime Minister Keir Starmer, now holds the AI portfolio jointly under the Cabinet Office and the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade.
Another Indian-origin minister, Lisa Nandy, retained her position as Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, with expanded responsibilities. Ms. Nandy, who represents the Wigan constituency in Greater Manchester, is a close ally of Mr. Burnham.
Mr. Narayan described his elevation as a sign of the Prime Minister's commitment to AI's importance. 'AI is likely the most significant technology in human history. Its impact will dwarf other things,' he said. He acknowledged public concerns about jobs and the pace of change, but emphasized that the nation must shape AI rather than be shaped by it. He pledged to act with 'pace and ambition' to secure British influence in shaping AI.
The 36-year-old MP for the Vale of Glamorgan, who was born in Bihar, India, moved to Cardiff with his family as a child. He studied at Oxford and Stanford universities before entering politics. He has been vocal about the importance of the India-UK relationship, stating recently that the stability of the bilateral relationship would continue in the months ahead.
Mr. Narayan's appointment is part of a broader cabinet reshuffle. Shabana Mahmood, of South Asian heritage, continues as Home Secretary. Jonathan Reynolds, who oversaw the completion of the India-UK free trade agreement last year, retains the trade portfolio. Allies of former Prime Minister Starmer were removed from government positions, a standard practice in ministerial transitions.
