BRICS Environment Ministers Release Four Compendiums Sharing Green Solutions

New Delhi, August 18, 2026 — The 12th BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting witnessed the launch of four knowledge compendiums prepared by the BRICS Environment Working Group, marking a significant step in collective environmental governance. The documents, unveiled by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav and heads of delegations from member countries, compile leading practices, knowledge systems, and innovations across the bloc.

The compendiums address four critical areas: sustainable lifestyles, integrated fire management, landscape-based greening approaches, and circular economy frameworks. Each document is designed to facilitate experience-sharing and policy alignment among BRICS nations, which include Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, along with newly admitted members.

The first compendium focuses on how member countries are operationalising sustainable lifestyles through policy innovation, behavioural change campaigns, and environmental education. It examines case studies and success stories that demonstrate practical implementation of sustainability principles at individual and community levels.

The second document offers a consolidated perspective on fire management. It spans prevention, preparedness, early warning systems, early action, and response and recovery mechanisms. The compendium reflects a shared vision to mitigate wildfire risks, which have intensified due to climate change.

The third compendium addresses interconnected challenges such as land degradation, desertification, biodiversity loss, and climate change. It showcases integrated landscape-based approaches and policy measures that help restore ecosystems while supporting local livelihoods.

The fourth compendium explores extended producer responsibility (EPR) frameworks and circular economy practices. It compiles regulatory instruments, institutional models, and business cases that enable a transition towards a resource-efficient and resilient economy.

According to an official statement from the environment ministry, “The compendiums identify key areas where BRICS cooperation can be strengthened, including knowledge and experience sharing, digital traceability solutions, technical capacity building, and the development of circular business models to advance resource-efficient, resilient, and sustainable economies.”

The release of these documents underscores the growing emphasis on South-South cooperation in environmental governance. BRICS nations collectively represent a significant share of global population, biodiversity, and carbon emissions, making their collaborative efforts crucial for meeting international climate and sustainability targets.

The meeting also provided a platform for member countries to deliberate on future cooperative initiatives, including joint research, technology transfer, and capacity-building programmes. The compendiums are expected to serve as reference materials for policymakers, researchers, and practitioners in the coming years.

India, as a key player in BRICS, has been actively promoting sustainable practices through domestic policies such as the Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE) initiative, which aligns with the themes of the first compendium. The launch event was attended by senior delegates from member nations, who expressed confidence in the utility of these documents.
