Bihar Temple Tragedy: 7 Dead, Several Injured in Lakhisarai Crowd Incident

At least seven people were killed and several others injured in a stampede-like incident at the Ashokdham Temple in Bihar's Lakhisarai district on early Monday morning, according to officials. The incident occurred as a large crowd of devotees had gathered at the temple, which saw an unusually heavy turnout on the occasion of Shravan Somvaar, a day considered highly auspicious for worshipping Lord Shiva.

Confirming the deaths, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Shivam Kumar said, "Seven casualties have been reported. It is being said that an electric pole fell there and people were electrocuted, which led to a stampede-like situation. We can tell you the exact reason only after verifying everything." He added that the situation is being closely monitored and injured persons have been rushed to nearby medical facilities.

Lakhisarai District Magistrate Shailendra Kumar provided further details about the sequence of events. "The crowd swelled in an unprecedented manner. Around 6.30-6.45 am, two trains came here that too added to the crowd. Arrangements were made as we had anticipated the crowd. We then came to know that barricading broke on one side due to the crowd and people fell on each other. We rushed 10-15 people here immediately," he said.

The Ashokdham Temple draws a massive number of devotees, especially during the holy month of Shravan, when thousands of pilgrims visit to offer water to Lord Shiva. Monday, being the first day of the week, is traditionally associated with Shiva worship, leading to larger gatherings than usual. The district administration had reportedly made arrangements in anticipation of the heavy footfall, but the sudden influx of devotees, including those arriving by two trains, overwhelmed the existing crowd-control measures.

Authorities have launched a thorough investigation into the incident to determine the exact cause. Initial reports suggest a combination of factors, including a possible electrocution from a fallen electric pole and a subsequent stampede caused by a breach in barricades. However, officials have stated that the precise sequence of events will only be confirmed after a detailed inquiry.

Local administration teams, along with police and medical personnel, have been deployed to manage the situation and provide assistance to the affected families. Senior officials have also visited the site to oversee relief operations. The injured are being treated at district hospitals, and the condition of some is stated to be critical.

This tragic incident has raised fresh concerns about crowd management at religious sites during peak pilgrimage seasons. In the past, similar stampedes during festivals have led to loss of life, prompting experts to call for improved infrastructure, better crowd-flow management, and stricter safety protocols at such venues.

As the community mourns the loss of lives, district authorities have urged people to remain calm and cooperate with officials. Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
