Bihar Temple Stampede: 7 Devotees Dead, Many Injured During Shrawan Rush

At least seven devotees were killed and a dozen others injured in a stampede at the Ashok Dham temple in Lakhisarai district, Bihar, on Monday, August 17, 2026. The incident occurred during a heavy rush of devotees on the third Monday of the holy month of Shrawan, a period considered highly auspicious for the worship of Lord Shiva.

Eyewitnesses said two trains full of devotees had arrived at Lakhisarai railway station in the morning. The devotees, most of them women, rushed towards the temple to offer sacred water to Lord Shiva at the shrine, a practice common during Shrawan. The sudden surge of the crowd caused a bamboo barricade to give way, and an electric pole snapped at the spot. This triggered a stampede that led to the deaths and injuries.

Lakhisarai District Magistrate Shailendra Kumar, who took charge of the district in April 2026, confirmed the sequence of events. "The incident happened at 6:40 in the morning today due to a heavy rush of devotees. The barricade broke down, which triggered a sudden stampede that led to the incident," he said. He added that district officials were present at the site to control the situation from the beginning.

The Ashok Dham temple is a prominent shrine in the region, known for its distinctive white dome, which is visible from trains passing through Lakhisarai. The temple lies close to Lakhisarai railway station, making it easily accessible for pilgrims arriving by train. During the month of Shrawan, especially on Mondays, the temple witnesses an unusually large influx of devotees from various parts of Bihar and neighbouring states.

According to local residents, at least seven devotees lost their lives, and most of them were women. Over a dozen others were injured in the melee. The injured have been admitted to the Sadar (town) government hospital for medical assistance. Locals said the death toll and the number of injured could rise further, as some of those hospitalised are in a serious condition.

The district administration has mobilised personnel to manage the situation. Police and health teams have been deployed at the temple premises and at the hospital. Additional crowd-control measures have been put in place to prevent any further untoward incident. Officials said they are closely monitoring the condition of those undergoing treatment.

The incident highlights the difficulties of managing large religious gatherings at sites with limited infrastructure, a challenge that has led to similar tragedies in different parts of India in the past. More details about the incident and the identity of the victims are awaited from official sources.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.
