Ben Stokes Announces Immediate Retirement from International Cricket

Ben Stokes, the England Test captain, stunned the cricketing world on Sunday by announcing his immediate retirement from international cricket at the conclusion of the ongoing Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge.

The 35-year-old all-rounder made the announcement to his teammates during the tea break on Day 4. England were set a target of 353 runs in the fourth innings. Stokes opened the batting and scored a quick 30 off 20 balls, including two sixes, before being dismissed.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the day's play, Stokes revealed the emotional and physical toll that led to his decision. He said he had told his wife, 'I don't actually think I have any more fight left in me to get over this, to be honest.'

Stokes, appointed England Test captain in 2022, said that since the Ashes series, the challenges have mounted. He described the captaincy as 'the best thing I've ever been asked to do,' but acknowledged the draining effect it has had on him.

'What we do is brutal—physically, mentally, and all of that,' Stokes said. 'At 35, I feel like I have to do so much physical work just to keep doing what I do out there. I had to ask myself, do I have that fight in me to keep doing that?'

Stokes retires with over 10,000 international runs and more than 300 wickets. He is only the third player to achieve 7,000 Test runs and 200 wickets, joining Garry Sobers and Jacques Kallis. His career highlights include winning the Ashes, the 2019 Cricket World Cup, and the 2022 T20 World Cup.

The decision comes weeks after Stokes was involved in an altercation at a nightclub, which resulted in a one-match suspension. He returned to lead the side in this Test, but the incident added to the emotional strain.

'Over the last five or six weeks, it felt like something else I had to try and overcome. I feel like I’ve been pretty good at that throughout my career—at overcoming on-field and off-field disappointment. But the emotional side of this since Australia … ', he said.

Stokes expressed satisfaction with his career, stating, 'I’m pretty happy and content with everything I’ve managed to do.'
