Doué strike helps PSG retain UEFA Super Cup with 2-1 win over Aston Villa
Paris St Germain retained the UEFA Super Cup with a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa on Wednesday (August 12, 2026), becoming only the third club to win the trophy in consecutive seasons.
The match brought together the winners of Europe's two premier club competitions, with PSG having conquered the Champions League for a second straight year and Villa triumphing in the Europa League. Villa, who won the Super Cup in 1982, were making their first appearance in the fixture in more than four decades.
PSG started brightly, with Villa goalkeeper Marco Bizot making an early save from Désiré Doué. In the 20th minute, Doué turned provider, slipping the ball to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia inside the area. The Georgian winger shimmied past defender Matty Cash and unleashed an unstoppable shot into the net.
Aston Villa gradually grew into the match, and their pressure paid off on the stroke of halftime. John McGinn floated a cross towards the six-yard box, and 17-year-old Brian Madjo, making his Villa debut, volleyed into the roof of the net. Madjo had earlier sent two headers off target and struck the outside of the post before his composed finish.
Madjo's goal made him the youngest scorer in UEFA Super Cup history. The forward, signed from Metz in January, had been cleared to play only last week after the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld Aston Villa's appeal against a FIFA ruling that had blocked his registration.
Luis Enrique introduced Ousmane Dembélé for Maghnes Akliouche at halftime, a change that added fresh impetus to PSG's attack. Villa had the first chance of the second half when McGinn forced a save from Matvey Safonov, but it was PSG who struck again in the 61st minute. Dembélé released Doué with a precise through ball, and the young Frenchman curled a shot into the far corner. The goal was initially ruled out for offside but was confirmed after a VAR review.
Villa enjoyed lengthy spells of possession in the closing stages, but PSG's defensive organisation limited them to few clear opportunities. The Parisians held on to join AC Milan and Real Madrid as the only clubs to have retained the Super Cup.
"We are always hungry, we want more," Doué told TNT Sports. "After the Champions League final, I said we wanted more. We have ambitions, we're a young team, and we want to win everything again this season."
The victory was Luis Enrique's 13th trophy since taking charge of PSG in 2023. He fielded nine of the 11 players who started the Champions League final, despite several of his squad having recently returned from the World Cup. Villa manager Unai Emery, meanwhile, suffered his fourth defeat in four Super Cup appearances as a coach.
Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan took charge of the match. Artan had been scheduled to officiate at the World Cup, but was unable to travel to the United States after being denied entry. He was subsequently assigned to the Super Cup.
PSG will now prepare for the French Super Cup match against Lens on Sunday (August 16). Aston Villa will turn their attention to the Premier League season.
