Anganwadi Worker Collapses, Dies While Enumerating Voters in Karnataka's Bhadravathi
Manjula, a 52-year-old anganwadi worker, died on Monday while performing voter enumeration duties in Kodi Hosur village under Bhadravathi taluk, Shivamogga district.
The deceased was part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and was visiting households when she collapsed. She was immediately rushed to a local hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead.
Manjula, a resident of Kallapura, is survived by her husband and a son. She had been working as an anganwadi worker at the Kallapura centre for several years.
On Tuesday, Deputy Commissioner Prabhulinga Kavalikatti visited Manjula’s residence to offer condolences. He assured the family that the district administration would ensure all eligible compensation is provided. Superintendent of Police B. Nikhil, Additional Deputy Commissioner V. Abhishek, and Bhadravathi Tahsildar Pradeep D. were also present during the visit.
The incident highlights the physical demands placed on grassroots-level workers who are crucial for the conduct of free and fair elections. The Election Commission of India has often emphasised the importance of accurate voter rolls, and workers like Manjula play a key role in this process.
The district administration has initiated steps to process compensation under relevant government schemes. Officials have also expressed their commitment to supporting the family during this difficult time.
