9 Indian fishermen arrested by Sri Lanka as maritime dispute escalates

The Sri Lankan Navy arrested nine Indian fishermen on Wednesday and seized their trawler on charges of illegal fishing in the island nation's waters near Talaimannar. The fishermen were apprehended during an operation after more than 50 Indian trawlers were allegedly found fishing south of Iranativu, crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).

The arrested individuals and their boat have been handed over to the Fisheries Inspector of Mannar for legal proceedings. This incident is part of a long-standing dispute between India and Sri Lanka over fishing rights in the Palk Strait.

According to Sri Lankan Navy data, 128 Indian fishermen have been arrested and 18 trawlers seized so far this year on allegations of poaching. The recurring arrests highlight the need for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict that affects the livelihoods of thousands of fishermen on both sides.
