6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Off Japan's Coast, No Tsunami Warning
A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the northeastern coast of Japan early on Sunday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. The quake occurred at 7:25 a.m. local time, approximately 40 kilometres below the seabed off Iwate Prefecture. Shaking was felt in Aomori Prefecture and other nearby regions.
No tsunami warning was issued, and there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. However, the recent sequence of earthquakes, coinciding with typhoon season, has raised concerns about potential mudslides in affected areas.
This tremor follows a 7.2 magnitude earthquake that hit the same region on Thursday, which was later revised upward from an initial estimate. Additionally, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake shook Yamanashi Prefecture near Mount Fuji on Friday.
The Japan Meteorological Agency has warned that further quakes may occur. Japan, situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, experiences frequent seismic activity and has stringent building codes to mitigate damage.
