Mumbai Fire Tragedy: Woman and Toddler Die in Vile Parle Blaze, Four Injured
A tragic fire in a residential building in Mumbai's Vile Parle (West) claimed the lives of a young woman and a two-and-a-half-year-old child, with four others injured, officials said on Wednesday. The incident occurred on Tuesday night at 'Shanta Bhavan,' a 12-storey building located on Baptista Road.
The fire broke out around 10:02 p.m. in two flats on the 11th floor. According to officials, the blaze spread through electrical wiring, installations, an air-conditioning unit, household articles, and the kitchen, spanning an estimated area of 4,000 square feet. The exact cause of the fire has not yet been established.
The deceased have been identified as Ankita (23) and Abir (2.5). The six injured individuals were taken to Nanavati Hospital, where two were declared dead on arrival. The remaining four — Parth (32), Hiren (64), Yashasvi (33), and Abishek — are reported to be stable.
Dr. Mugdha, Chief Medical Officer at Nanavati Hospital, said, "A total of six injured have been reported; two have been declared dead on arrival, and the remaining four are stable."
Fire brigade personnel reached the spot soon after the alert and launched a firefighting operation. The blaze was brought under control after a sustained effort, and the affected floors were inspected to rule out further risks. An official investigation has been initiated to determine the circumstances leading to the incident.
Local authorities have extended assistance to the affected families and assured them of all necessary support, including medical care for the injured. The community has expressed grief over the loss of two young lives.
This tragedy also underscores the persistent challenge of fire safety in high-rise residential buildings across Mumbai. With dense urban living and ageing electrical infrastructure, such incidents can have devastating consequences.
