Tata Sons Chairman Chandrasekaran Receives UK Honorary Knighthood
Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran has been conferred the honorary award of The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (Civil Division) by King Charles III, in recognition of his services to UK-India business relations. The announcement was made on February 14, 2025, via a post on the Tata Group's official social media handle on X.
The honorary DBE/KBE is a civilian honour typically given to foreign nationals for substantial contributions to the United Kingdom. Unlike full knighthoods, honorary recipients are not entitled to use the prefix 'Sir' or 'Dame'. In his response, Chandrasekaran said, "I am deeply humbled by this prestigious recognition, for which I am grateful to His Majesty, King Charles."
In a video message accompanying the announcement, Chandrasekaran highlighted the Tata Group's strong ties with the UK. "We are incredibly proud of our iconic British brands like Jaguar Land Rover and Tetley. We employ more than 70,000 people in the U.K.," he said. He also spoke about research partnerships with British universities, including the University of Oxford, the London School of Economics, the University of Warwick, and the University of Swansea.
The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire was established in 1917 by King George V. Its Civil Division recognises achievements in non-military fields. For foreign nationals, the accolade is honorary, meaning it does not confer the full title or membership of the Order. The formal investiture ceremony for Chandrasekaran has not yet been announced.
Chandrasekaran has served as Chairman of Tata Sons since 2017, leading the conglomerate through a period of growth and global expansion. Before that, he was the CEO of Tata Consultancy Services from 2009 to 2017, where he played a key role in expanding the company's international footprint. Under his leadership as Chairman, Tata Group has maintained a significant presence in the UK, with businesses spanning technology, automotive, steel, hospitality, consumer goods, and chemicals. The group's ownership of Jaguar Land Rover and Tetley Tea has made it one of the most recognisable Indian investors in the UK.
Expressing gratitude on behalf of the Tata Group, Chandrasekaran added, "My deep thanks to HM Government for their support for the Group. It is a strong and enduring relationship, and I look forward to strengthening our presence in the U.K. further."
The honour comes at a time when India and the UK are increasing their bilateral economic engagement, including negotiations for a free trade agreement. While no official link has been drawn between the award and ongoing trade talks, the recognition reflects the deep business and diplomatic relationships between the two countries.
This is not the first time the Tata Group has been recognised by the UK. The group's association with Britain dates back to 1907, when it opened its first overseas office in London. Over the decades, its contributions have been acknowledged through various channels. Chandrasekaran's honorary knighthood adds to the list of honours received by Indian business leaders on the international stage, underscoring the growing economic ties between India and the UK.
