14 KSEB workers die in workplace accidents this year; safety violations blamed
The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) is grappling with a rise in workplace accidents that have claimed the lives of 14 workers this year. According to the utility, four of its staff and ten contract employees have died in such incidents so far in 2023.
In addition to the fatalities, 81 accidents resulted in what the board classifies as 'non-grievous' injuries. A July 15 internal circular from KSEB management identified eight major causes for these mishaps, including infringement of safety rules, over-confidence, carelessness, and failure to use safety equipment.
The accidents occurred in various forms: electric shock accounted for 33 cases, falls from electric posts for 24, and snapping or crashing of posts for 17. The board stated that it views the rise in accidents with 'all seriousness,' despite repeated issuance of safety guidelines and awareness programmes.
The circular directed safety officers and deputy safety commissioners to take stern action against any lapses and emphasised the need for all Electrical Section Offices to develop a 'safety culture.' Senior officers have been asked to ensure strict compliance with safety guidelines during work on electrical installations.
KSEB has previously taken steps to improve workplace safety. In 2018, its Capital Investment Plan for 2018-2022 included a 'Safety Plan' to distribute 14,000 fully-equipped safety kits to field staff. The current spate of accidents highlights ongoing challenges in protecting workers even as the board deals with a power crisis.
