Veteran Tamil Filmmaker K. Bhagyaraj Dies at 73 After Heart Attack
K. Bhagyaraj, the renowned Tamil filmmaker, actor, producer, and composer, died on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at Apollo Hospital in Chennai. He was 73 years old. The cause of death was cardiopulmonary arrest following a massive heart attack, according to hospital sources.
Bhagyaraj was rushed to the hospital after suffering the heart attack. Medical teams attempted resuscitation, but efforts were unsuccessful.
Born on March 7, 1953, Bhagyaraj began his film career as an assistant director to veteran filmmaker Bharathiraja on the 1977 film 16 Vayathinile. He went on to become a leading figure in Tamil cinema, directing, writing, and acting in numerous films. He also worked as a producer and composer.
Earlier this year, Bhagyaraj celebrated 50 years in the film industry on his 73rd birthday. He is survived by his wife, Poornima Bhagyaraj, and their two children, actor Shanthanu and Saranya Bhagyaraj.
