US Says It Will Not Hinder Venezuelan Opposition Leader's Return
The United States has stated it will not obstruct the return of Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado to her home country, a US diplomat said on Wednesday. Deputy Assistant Secretary for South America Luis Mendez told Congress that the State Department's policy is clear: not to block Ms. Machado's return.
Ms. Machado left Venezuela in December to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in Norway and has not returned since. Following the devastating earthquakes on June 24, she has attempted to return to Caracas multiple times but faced diplomatic barriers from Venezuelan authorities.
Mr. Mendez noted that conditions in Venezuela must be such that Ms. Machado will not face arrest upon her return. He confirmed that the US has communicated clearly to Venezuelan authorities the importance of allowing her safe return. The Venezuelan government has announced plans to meet with opposition party members starting next month.
