A U.S. military transport plane landed at Moscow's Vnukovo airport on Tuesday morning, according to data from the flight tracking service Flightradar24. The aircraft, a Boeing Globemaster with U.S. registration number 07-7181, arrived from Riga, Latvia, and touched down at approximately 0700 GMT. The purpose of the flight was not immediately clear, and Reuters could not verify whether the plane carried any cargo or passengers.
When asked about the landing, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the Kremlin had no information on the matter. He did not elaborate.
Flightradar24 data showed the aircraft had arrived in Riga on August 23 from Camp Springs airbase near Washington D.C., before continuing to Moscow. The flight path is notable because Russia and many Western countries have imposed reciprocal airspace restrictions since the start of the Ukraine conflict, making such direct routes uncommon. Vnukovo, one of Moscow's major international airports, has frequently been used as a landing point for high-level diplomatic visits.

This is the first direct flight of a U.S.-registered aircraft from Europe to Russia since January, when a similar plane carried U.S. special envoys Steven Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Moscow for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the conflict in Ukraine. That meeting was part of a broader diplomatic push to end the war, which has now lasted more than three years. The January talks were described by both sides as substantive, but they did not produce a framework for a ceasefire.
Since then, the peace process has made little headway. Last week, the Kremlin said there was no information yet about another visit by Mr. Kushner and Mr. Witkoff, indicating that no immediate talks were planned. The discussions have been largely stalled, with both Washington and Moscow blaming each other for the lack of progress.
The Ukraine conflict has also been overshadowed by the ongoing war in Iran, which has drawn international attention and military resources from multiple countries. The interaction between these two crises has complicated diplomatic efforts, as the U.S. and Russia hold opposing positions on both conflicts.
Neither the U.S. Department of Defense nor the Russian Ministry of Defence has issued an official statement about Tuesday's landing. Officials at Vnukovo airport declined to comment. The presence of a U.S. military aircraft in Moscow, regardless of its mission, is a reminder of the limited but ongoing channels of communication between the two nuclear powers.
