UN-led Operation to Evacuate 11,000 Seafarers in Gulf; US Senate Rebukes Trump on Iran

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has announced a large-scale plan to evacuate all ships and approximately 11,000 seafarers stranded in the Persian Gulf due to the ongoing war in West Asia. IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez stated that the operation will be conducted in close cooperation with Iran, Oman, other coastal states, the United States, and the maritime industry.

In a separate development, the United States Senate approved a war powers resolution for the first time, seeking to block U.S. military action against Iran. The resolution passed by a vote of 50-48, marking a significant rebuke to President Donald Trump's handling of the conflict. Lawmakers expressed concern over the administration's unilateral actions and the need for congressional approval for funding.

In India, a devastating fire in a building in Aliganj, Lucknow, that killed 15 people has brought scrutiny to the local development authority. Records show the building was issued a demolition order in 2016 due to unauthorized construction, but the order was revoked within two months. The building was originally allotted in 1980 under a hire-purchase scheme.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, during talks with National Security Adviser Ajit Doval in New Delhi, called for accelerating the resumption of dialogue mechanisms between India and China, including in trade and finance. He emphasized respect for each other's core interests and handling the boundary issue without affecting bilateral ties.

Access to the messaging platform Telegram was restored after a week-long blocking order imposed ahead of the NEET re-examination expired. The Delhi High Court declined to stay the order, noting it was narrow and proportionate. The National Testing Agency had argued that Telegram's message editing feature could enable misinformation.

The Congress party has demanded a high-level probe, led by a Supreme Court judge, into an alleged land scam involving Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav's family. A report claims that family members purchased 168 acres of land in and around Ujjain between December 2023 and December 2025, where infrastructure projects were later announced.
