Thai PM Pledges Stricter Gun Laws After Eight Killed in Shooting

Thailand's Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has announced plans to introduce stricter gun control laws following a shooting incident that left eight people dead. The pledge, made on Friday, comes as authorities investigate the circumstances that allowed a teenager to access a legally owned firearm.

Police Colonel Thadsakorn Konthong, who is leading the investigation, said that the gun and ammunition used in the attack belonged to the teenager's grandfather. An initial inspection revealed that the firearm had been kept in the grandfather's bedroom, where it was accessed without permission, according to the officer.

The weapon was legally registered and held a valid permit, according to local and international media reports. This detail has fueled public concern over how firearms are stored and supervised in private homes, even when owners comply with registration requirements.

Thailand has one of the highest rates of civilian gun ownership in Southeast Asia. Estimates suggest that approximately 10.3 million firearms are in civilian possession across the country, with around four million of those believed to be unlicensed. Despite the existence of strict gun laws, enforcement has been inconsistent, allowing a significant number of illegal weapons to circulate.

During his previous role as Interior Minister, Anutin introduced a temporary ban on new gun licences and imposed restrictions on firearm imports. Speaking on Friday, the Prime Minister expressed deep regret over the incident. "I don't just feel sorry for the victims but I feel sorry that this happened. How can this happen in our country?" he said, reflecting the shock and grief felt across the nation.

While the country has stringent regulations on paper, observers point to a lack of robust implementation and insufficient oversight as key factors contributing to gun-related violence.
