UAE issues missile alert, urges residents to seek shelter after detected threat

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) issued a brief mobile phone alert on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, warning of “potential missile threats” and advising residents to take immediate safety precautions. The alert, issued by the Interior Ministry, asked people to “seek a safe place in the closest secure building.” It was lifted shortly afterwards.

The UAE’s Ministry of Defence confirmed that it had detected a missile threat directed towards the country. This was the first such alert since a false alarm in June and an earlier alert in July for an attack that ultimately did not enter UAE territory. The previous missile warning before that occurred in early May.

In recent weeks, tankers belonging to the state-owned oil company ADNOC have been repeatedly targeted, according to official reports. The latest alert comes amid heightened regional tensions following the escalation of the West Asia conflict that began on February 28.

During the initial phase of the conflict, the UAE was subjected to a significant number of missile and drone attacks, with nearly 3,000 projectiles directed towards the country, more than any other nation in the region. Those attacks subsided after a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) came into effect in June between the parties involved. However, that agreement has since collapsed, and the UAE has reported no major attacks since then, unlike some other Gulf states.

The brief nature of Tuesday’s alert and the Defence Ministry’s confirmation suggest that the potential threat was assessed and did not materialise into an actual strike. Authorities have not released further details about the origin or trajectory of the detected missile. No casualties or damage have been reported.

This incident underscores the fragile security environment in the region. The UAE has maintained a cautious stance, urging citizens and residents to remain vigilant while reassuring them that its defence systems are operational. In previous alerts, residents were advised to follow instructions from official channels and avoid spreading unverified information.

The development also comes at a time when the closure of the Strait of Hormuz remains a contentious issue, with Iranian officials stating that the strait will stay closed until certain conditions are met in an interim deal with the United States. The strait is a critical waterway for global oil shipments, and any disruption could have far-reaching economic consequences.

Regional analysts have noted that the UAE’s response to such threats reflects a broader pattern of heightened preparedness among Gulf nations. The country has invested heavily in missile defence systems and has participated in joint military exercises with international partners to enhance its capability to respond to aerial threats.

Meanwhile, the international community has called for restraint on all sides to prevent further escalation. The United Nations and several countries have urged dialogue and adherence to international law, emphasizing the need to protect civilian lives and ensure the safety of critical infrastructure.

As of now, the UAE’s Interior Ministry has not issued any additional alerts. The situation remains calm, but authorities continue to monitor developments closely. Residents are advised to stay informed through official government channels and to follow any guidance issued by local authorities.

Afghanistan says its forces killed 41 fighters from Pakistan; Islamabad yet to respond

Afghanistan's Defence Ministry says its forces killed 41 fighters and captured 62 in three days of clashes in Nuristan province, claiming they crossed from Pakistan with Islamabad's support. Kabul summoned Pakistan's chargé d'affaires to lodge a protest, while Pakistan has rejected similar claims in the past. Neither account has been independently verified, and the UN mission in Afghanistan says cross-border violence has caused over 1,100 civilian deaths and injuries this year.
