Trump Thanks Iran for Releasing US Detainee Amid Ongoing Military Strikes

US President Donald Trump has praised Iran for releasing an American citizen who had been detained in the country since December 2024. The development comes as the United States continues to conduct military strikes against Iranian targets, highlighting the complex interplay between diplomacy and conflict.

In a statement posted on his Truth Social platform on Thursday, Trump confirmed that the woman had safely left Iran and thanked the Iranian government for allowing her departure. He described the detention as “wrongful” and criticised the administration of former President Joe Biden, under whose tenure the detention occurred.

“Iran has allowed an American Citizen, who was wrongfully detained in December of 2024 under the ‘presidency’ of Sleepy Joe Biden, to leave the Country. She is now safely outside of Iran, and in good condition. The United States of America appreciates this gesture of Goodwill by Iran!” Trump wrote.

The timing of the release is notable. It comes amid heightened tensions between the two countries, with the US having carried out fresh airstrikes on Iranian positions in recent days. Neither the White House nor the Iranian foreign ministry has provided further details on the circumstances of the woman’s release or the status of other American detainees believed to be held in Iran.

Human rights organisations have frequently criticised Iran for arbitrary detentions of foreign nationals, which Tehran often denies or frames as legitimate judicial proceedings. The United States has designated Iran as a state sponsor of terrorism and maintains extensive sanctions against the country.

Trump’s statement did not address the ongoing military operations. His administration has pursued a policy of maximum pressure against Iran, including economic sanctions and military deterrence. Critics argue that such actions could escalate regional instability, while supporters contend they are necessary to curb Iran’s nuclear and missile programmes.

The released citizen’s identity has not been publicly disclosed, and it is unclear whether any prisoner exchange or conditions were involved in her release. Previous releases of American detainees from Iran have often been linked to negotiations or the unfreezing of Iranian assets, but no such details have emerged in this case.

This incident underscores the volatile nature of US-Iran relations, where moments of cooperation can occur even as hostilities persist. For the individual involved, the release brings an end to a period of uncertainty and hardship. For the broader geopolitical landscape, it represents a rare positive step in a relationship marked by decades of mistrust.

Trump described the release as a goodwill gesture, while Karari's lawyer stated she was targeted due to her charity work and faced interrogation but was never physically detained.
