Tragedy at Bengaluru Metro: Labourer Electrocuted During Work Near Trinity Station
A 35-year-old labourer died after being electrocuted while working on a lighting project near Trinity Metro Station in Bengaluru on Friday afternoon. The incident occurred around 3:52 pm near Pillar No. 153, during earth pit excavation work being carried out by contractor M/s M R Electricals, according to the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL).
The worker inadvertently came into contact with a live electrical source during the excavation. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. BMRCL officials stated that the exact cause of the incident is under investigation.
The deceased has been identified as a migrant worker from another state, though his name has not been released pending family notification. His body has been sent for post-mortem.
BMRCL has initiated a detailed investigation and assured that all necessary safety protocols are being reviewed. The contractor has been directed to cooperate fully with the authorities. This incident highlights the risks faced by workers in infrastructure projects, especially in urban areas where electrical lines are often close to construction sites.
The tragedy comes in the same week that Bengaluru Metro experienced two service disruptions on the Purple Line. On Tuesday, a technical fault in a train at Cubbon Park Metro Station forced the suspension of through services, with trains operating only between Challaghatta-Magadi Road and MG Road-Whitefield, causing inconvenience to thousands of commuters. On Thursday, another issue at the same station involving a train door that failed to close properly due to a passenger's chain getting stuck led to passengers being deboarded as a safety precaution. The delay lasted about 17 minutes, affecting five subsequent train services before normal operations resumed.
BMRCL has expressed condolences to the family of the deceased labourer and assured that all possible assistance will be provided. The corporation also stated that safety measures are being strengthened to prevent such accidents in the future.
