Indian Software Engineer Killed in Ohio Head-On Collision with Pickup Truck
A 26-year-old software engineer from Andhra Pradesh has died in a road accident in the United States, leaving his family in India in grief. Dileep Kumar Bungatavula, a native of Jettivaripalli village in Kadapa district, was killed when a pickup truck crossed the median and struck his sedan on Interstate 480 in Macedonia, Ohio, on August 7, 2026.
Bungatavula had moved to the United States to pursue higher education after completing his schooling in India. He earned a Master of Science degree from Kent State University in 2025 and had recently started working for a software company in the US. His family said that they had high hopes for his future and that he was beginning to establish himself professionally.
According to local police, Bungatavula was driving a sedan in the Macedonia area of Ohio when a pickup truck travelling in the opposite direction crossed the centre median and collided head-on with his vehicle. Emergency responders found Bungatavula dead at the scene. Three other people involved in the accident were taken to a nearby hospital and are undergoing treatment. Their identities and current conditions have not been disclosed by the authorities.
The crash occurred on Interstate 480, a major highway in the Cleveland metropolitan region. Macedonia is a city in Summit County, Ohio. Authorities have not released further details about the incident.
An investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing. Police have not said whether any charges could be filed, and no further information about the drivers or vehicles has been made public.
The Consulate General of India in New York confirmed Bungatavula’s death and expressed its condolences. In a statement on the social media platform X, the consulate said: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the untimely demise of Dileep Kumar Bungatavula, an Indian national, who tragically lost his life in a car accident in Ohio on August 7, 2026. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his family during this difficult time. The Consulate is in touch with the family and is extending all possible assistance.”
In India, the news of his death has left his family and friends in shock. His father, Sreehari Bungatavula, is a farmer, and the family comes from modest financial circumstances. They had made significant sacrifices to send their son abroad for education, with hopes that he would build a successful career.
The North America Telugu Society has initiated a fundraiser to support Bungatavula’s family. In an appeal, the society said: “For Dileep’s parents and his brother in India, this sudden loss is unimaginable. His parents made significant sacrifices to support their son’s education, hoping to see him complete his studies and build a successful future.”
The society is mobilising resources to help the family with expenses, including the repatriation of his body to India. The family is making arrangements to bring his remains back for the final rites.
Meanwhile, the Indian consulate is providing consular assistance and coordinating with relevant authorities to facilitate the return of the mortal remains.
