Toddler Drowns in Rain-Filled Trench in Pune; Contractor Booked for Negligence

A two-year-old boy died after falling into a trench filled with rainwater and sewage in Maharashtra's Pune district, prompting police to book the contractor responsible for the site, officials said on Friday.

The incident occurred on June 30 in Kadamwak Wasti, located in the Loni gram panchayat area. According to police, the trench, about three feet deep, had been dug alongside a drain to facilitate the flow of rainwater. However, it had accumulated both rainwater and sewage, creating a hazardous condition.

The toddler, who lived in a nearby settlement, accidentally fell into the trench while playing. His parents began searching for him after realizing he had been missing for an extended period. His body was later recovered from the trench.

A case has been registered against the contractor under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for alleged negligence, specifically for failing to provide adequate safety measures at the site, such as fencing or warning signs. Officials stated that the investigation is ongoing.

This incident highlights the critical importance of enforcing safety protocols at construction and excavation sites, especially in residential areas where children may be at risk. Local authorities have been urged to conduct regular inspections to prevent such tragedies.

The community has expressed grief over the loss, and calls for stricter accountability have been made. The contractor's identity has not been disclosed pending further investigation.
