Wildfires rage across Europe; French PM faces residents' anger over response

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu faced hostile reception from residents during a visit to the wildfire-hit region of Gironde in south-western France on Monday, as blazes continue to claim lives and force evacuations across Europe.

About 200 people gathered outside the town hall in Le Porge, where 183 homes were destroyed in recent fires. The organiser of a residents' group accused the Prime Minister of avoiding a meeting, while his office insisted that there was 'nothing to hide' in the handling of fire operations, according to the AFP news agency.

Mr. Lecornu announced €12 million (approximately £10.3 million) in aid for the Gironde and Landes regions. Of this amount, €10 million will go to Gironde and €2 million to Landes, enabling local authorities to 'launch projects without delay' and build what he described as 'a sort of recovery plan.' He also said building permits for the equivalent reconstruction of destroyed homes would be issued within a month, or sooner.

Residents, however, expressed frustration. Ludivine Daurignac, who organised the residents' group, told AFP that they intend to file complaints seeking 'truth, transparency, and justice.' She claimed they were prevented from meeting the Prime Minister, saying, 'We were met by lines of riot police blocking our access.'

Another local resident told France's BFM television: 'We would like to know why the fire was managed this way. Why all the firefighters who were on site left to defend the tip of Ferret, while only the volunteer firefighters remained.'

Tens of thousands of people were evacuated from the Cap Ferret peninsula, a popular tourist spot west of Bordeaux, last month as wildfires spread across Gironde. The region has been among the worst affected in France this summer, with blazes destroying large areas of forest and property.

The wildfires are not confined to France. Across Europe, firefighters battled blazes over the weekend. In Belgium, emergency crews spent a fourth consecutive day trying to control fires in the Hautes Fagnes nature reserve, the country's largest. The European Union has also deployed assistance to Belgium and Spain, which have faced severe fire conditions.

The situation underscores the growing challenge of wildfires in Europe, exacerbated by heatwaves and dry weather. Scientists point to climate change as a key factor increasing the frequency and intensity of such events. Governments are under pressure to improve fire prevention and response strategies.

In France, the Prime Minister's announcement of aid and expedited building permits is aimed at helping communities recover. However, the public anger seen in Le Porge reflects broader concerns about preparedness and transparency in wildfire management. Authorities have yet to respond to the specific allegations raised by residents about the deployment of firefighters.

As the fires continue, the need for coordinated action across Europe becomes more apparent. The EU's assistance to member states highlights the importance of solidarity in dealing with natural disasters that do not respect national borders.

The coming weeks will be critical as emergency services work to contain remaining blazes and as affected communities begin the long process of rebuilding. The remarks from residents and officials alike suggest that questions about wildfire management will remain a central issue in public discourse.
