CBI Chargesheet in Twisha Sharma Death Case Alleges Mental Cruelty and Financial Pressure

BHOPAL: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a chargesheet in the death of 34-year-old Twisha Sharma, accusing her husband Samarth Singh and mother-in-law Giribala Singh, a retired Principal and District Judge, of subjecting her to sustained mental cruelty and abetting her suicide. The chargesheet, filed on August 14, details events leading up to her death on May 12 at her Bhopal residence.

According to the CBI, Twisha had sent a WhatsApp message to her sister-in-law at 9:36 pm on May 12, asking her to ask Samarth to “collect the leftover of his wife” and saying she wanted to “die in peace.” CCTV footage cited by the agency shows her walking towards the terrace minutes later. She then called her father and mother, reportedly crying and stating that her husband had become “very aggressive and violent.” Around 10:23 pm, Samarth and Giribala were seen on CCTV going towards the terrace. Twisha was later found and rushed to AIIMS Bhopal, where she was declared brought dead at approximately 10:55 pm.

The chargesheet, running to 30 pages, reconstructs what the CBI describes as escalating psychological abuse within a marriage that lasted barely five months. It relies on WhatsApp messages, phone records, family statements, medical consultations, and financial allegations. The couple met through an online dating app in February 2025 and married in December 2025, according to the agency.

The CBI alleges that after the wedding, Samarth repeatedly used sexually derogatory language and attacked Twisha's character over relationships she had disclosed before marriage. Giribala is accused of instigating or siding with her son when Twisha complained about his behaviour. The agency further alleges that the couple pressured Twisha to return to Bhopal in March 2026 while she was staying with her father, who was recovering from a heart attack.

Around the same period, Twisha discovered she was pregnant on April 16. The CBI says she was uncertain about continuing the pregnancy because it was unplanned and because of Samarth's alleged abusive behaviour. An argument on April 17 reportedly led to her leaving the matrimonial home temporarily.

The chargesheet also details alleged financial pressure. Twisha had around Rs 20 lakh invested in shares through a demat account. The CBI alleges that Samarth and Giribala pushed her to transfer the investment into a joint bank account opened by Twisha and Samarth on April 7. Twisha refused, stating the money belonged to her father. The alleged pressure resurfaced on the day she died, with Twisha reportedly telling her sister-in-law that Samarth wanted the funds to invest in the Chinese share market.

The CBI has filed charges under Sections 85, 108, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. A separate investigation into a possible dowry angle is ongoing. The accused have not yet publicly responded to the chargesheet.

This case highlights the need for careful examination of evidence in cases of alleged domestic cruelty and suicide abetment. The judicial process will determine the veracity of the allegations, and the accused are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
