NSG's K9 Donny Receives Army Commendation for Red Fort Blast Detection

New Delhi: The National Security Guard's (NSG) K9 commando Donny has been awarded the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Commendation Card for his role in detecting explosives after the Red Fort blast last year. The commendation, announced on Independence Day, recognises Donny's timely interventions that helped prevent further loss of life.

On November 10, 2025, a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) detonated near Delhi's Red Fort, killing 12 people and injuring 32 others. In the immediate aftermath, Donny, a specialist in explosive detection from the elite NSG K9 Unit, was deployed to sanitise the blast site. Amid debris and heightened security concerns, the dog confirmed the presence of explosive traces, enabling forensic teams and security personnel to secure the area and rule out secondary devices.

Two days later, on November 12, Donny was tasked with screening a vehicle in Faridabad's Khandawali area that was suspected of transporting explosives linked to the attack. His acute sense of smell confirmed the presence of explosives in the vehicle, providing critical leads to investigators and thwarting plans for further violence. The Army's citation noted that Donny's performance under extreme pressure directly contributed to safeguarding public safety.

The COAS Commendation Card is conferred on personnel who demonstrate exceptional dedication, professionalism, and courage in service to the nation. This year's Independence Day list honoured 14 other individuals, including 11 Agniveers for distinguished service and two additional Army K9s, Lucky and Adil, for outstanding operational contributions.

Donny's recognition highlights the growing role of sniffer dogs in counter-terrorism operations. These canines are trained to detect explosive materials in challenging environments, where their sensitivity often surpasses electronic devices. The inclusion of three K9s in this year's commendation list underscores the Armed Forces' acknowledgement of their invaluable service.
