Threads reaches 500 million monthly users, Meta adds community hubs and feed controls
Meta’s social networking platform, Threads, has surpassed 500 million monthly active users, the company announced on June 16. The milestone comes as Meta introduces a set of new features designed to enhance community engagement and give users more control over their feeds.
Launched in July 2023 as a text-based alternative to X, Threads has gradually built a user base around shared interests. According to Meta, much of the recent growth has stemmed from communities centred on topics like books, sports, parenting and music. Recognising this trend, the company is expanding the tools available for these interest-based groups.
The centrepiece of the update is the formal graduation of the Communities feature out of its beta testing phase. Communities on Threads allow users to gather in dedicated spaces to discuss specific topics. With the expansion, a new Communities Hub will be accessible directly from the main menu, enabling users to easily discover, join and switch between different communities. Each community will also receive a custom icon to make it more recognisable within the platform.
In addition to the community enhancements, Threads is introducing more personalised feed controls. Users will have greater flexibility to customise what appears in their feeds, including the ability to prioritise content from followed accounts or communities they belong to. These controls aim to give individuals a more tailored experience, reflecting their own interests rather than algorithmic suggestions alone.
Meta stated that these changes are part of an ongoing effort to make Threads a space for meaningful conversations. The platform has been focusing on features that encourage positive interactions and reduce the spread of harmful content. The new community tools are expected to help users find like-minded people and engage in discussions without the noise often found on larger, more open social networks.
The 500 million user mark places Threads in a competitive position among social media platforms, though it still trails behind Meta’s flagship apps like Facebook and Instagram. The company has not disclosed daily active user numbers or detailed engagement metrics. Observers note that while the monthly figure is significant, sustained daily usage will be crucial for the platform’s long-term viability.
Meta’s announcement underscores its strategy of building interconnected ecosystems across its family of apps. Threads is closely integrated with Instagram, allowing users to log in with their existing accounts and share posts across both platforms. This integration has likely contributed to the user growth, as Instagram’s massive user base can seamlessly transition to Threads.
Privacy and safety features have also been a focus. Threads offers account blocking, content filtering and the ability to limit replies. The new community structures may further enable moderation, as group administrators can oversee discussions and enforce community guidelines.
Industry analysts have noted that Meta is positioning Threads to capitalise on users seeking alternatives to platforms like X, which have seen changes in policy and user sentiment. By emphasising community-driven spaces, Threads aims to differentiate itself through curated, interest-based interactions rather than real-time news or viral content.
The updates are rolling out gradually to users worldwide. Meta says it will continue to iterate based on feedback and usage patterns, with further feature announcements expected in the coming months. For now, the addition of community hubs and custom icons represents a step toward a more organised and user-centric social experience on Threads.
