Tata Elxsi, Sarla Aviation partner to develop six-seater air taxi
Tata Elxsi, the design and technology services arm of the Tata Group, has signed an agreement with Bengaluru-based advanced air mobility company Sarla Aviation to jointly develop an air taxi designed to carry six passengers and a pilot. The collaboration is aimed at accelerating the development of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for regional connectivity.
According to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Tata Elxsi will contribute its engineering expertise to Sarla Aviation's 'Shunya' platform. This includes work on avionics, flight-control systems, software integration, testing, verification and validation, and certification support. Sarla Aviation will lead the overall aircraft design and development, along with achieving type certification from regulatory authorities.
The partnership will also explore opportunities in sensor-fusion-based navigation software, industrial and structural design, and airworthiness testing. These areas are critical for ensuring the safety and reliability of advanced air mobility vehicles, which are expected to operate in both urban and inter-city environments.
The 'Shunya' aircraft is designed for flight operations exceeding 300 kilometres, combining vertical take-off and landing capability with the efficiency of fixed-wing cruise flight. This hybrid configuration allows for runway-independent operations while improving propulsion efficiency during longer journeys. Such features are intended to make air taxis practical for short-hop regional travel, potentially reducing road congestion and travel time.
The air taxi sector has gained attention globally as companies explore new modes of transportation that can bypass traditional ground infrastructure. India, with its dense urban corridors and developing regional air connectivity, is seen as a potential market for such technology. However, the commercial deployment of air taxis will require clear regulatory frameworks, airspace management systems, and public acceptance of new aviation technologies.
