Kerala to set up semiconductor capability park at Thiruvananthapuram's Technocity
The Kerala government is set to establish a Semiconductor Capability Development Park and a Science and Technology Experience Park at Technocity in Thiruvananthapuram. The project, coming up on a 10-acre plot with an investment of ₹100 crore, will be implemented by Xtra G Club Private Limited in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management, Keralam (IIITM-K).
The initiative aims to create an integrated ecosystem that combines semiconductor skill development, science and technology experiences, innovative research, entrepreneurship, industry collaboration, and public engagement. Unlike conventional educational setups, the proposed model focuses on hands-on learning, where technology is not merely studied or displayed but is experienced, tested, and created.
A key highlight of the project is its emphasis on semiconductor capability development. The park is envisioned to include semiconductor process demonstration facilities, electronics laboratories, chip-design learning environments, prototyping facilities, technology demonstration areas, and industry-oriented training programmes. These components are expected to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry requirements, preparing a skilled workforce for the growing semiconductor sector.
Semiconductors are the backbone of modern electronics, powering devices from smartphones to advanced computing systems. India has been making concerted efforts to boost its semiconductor ecosystem, with initiatives such as the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme and the establishment of chip fabrication units. Kerala's move to develop a dedicated capability park aligns with this national push, aiming to nurture local talent and attract investment in the high-tech sector.
Technocity, located on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram, is a major technology hub being developed by the Kerala government. It already hosts several IT and electronics companies, and the new park is expected to further strengthen the region's position as a centre for innovation and advanced technology education. The collaboration with IIITM-K, a premier institute known for its research in information technology and management, is seen as a strategic step to ensure academic rigour and industry relevance.
The project also seeks to foster public engagement by making science and technology accessible to all. The Science and Technology Experience Park attached to the facility is designed to attract students, researchers, entrepreneurs, and the general public, creating a culture of curiosity and innovation. By integrating skill development with experiential learning, the park aims to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.
