Tamil Nadu School Education Department Wins SKOCO Award 2026 for Three Transformative Initiatives
The School Education Department of Tamil Nadu has been awarded the SKOCO Award 2026 for three of its flagship educational initiatives: VETRI Palligal, TN SPARK, and Tamil Nadu Model Schools. The award recognises high-impact governance innovations that deliver measurable outcomes on a large scale.
According to an official press release, VETRI Palligal is the state's talent discovery and competitive exam support programme for government school students. It provides aptitude mapping, career guidance, and structured coaching for national entrance examinations. The initiative has expanded to 59,270 students across 339 hub schools in 236 blocks.
The TN SPARK initiative equips government school students with skills in artificial intelligence, robotics, coding, and other digital competencies essential for the future economy. In its first year, the programme established AI learning centres in over 5,000 schools, reaching 3.53 lakh students and training 6,000 teachers.
The Tamil Nadu Model Schools programme offers fully state-funded residential academic support for high-potential government school students aspiring to enter premier institutions. It currently serves 11,885 residential students across all 38 districts, with more than 1,300 students gaining admission to premier institutions each year.
B. Chandra Mohan, Secretary of the School Education Department, stated, 'This recognition reflects Tamil Nadu’s commitment to ensuring that no child’s future is limited by circumstance. Our focus remains on building a public education system that is equitable, aspirational, and future-ready.'
The SKOCO Award is known for acknowledging innovative governance practices that create lasting impact. Tamil Nadu's initiatives highlight the state's efforts to enhance equity and quality in public education through targeted interventions and technology integration.
