Kerala student assaulted for reporting drug abuse at Thodupuzha institute

A 19-year-old student was allegedly assaulted by fellow students after he reported drug abuse at a private institute in Thodupuzha, Idukki district. The incident has prompted police action after Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala intervened, and a case has been registered under the Anti-Ragging Act and attempt to murder charges.

According to the victim's complaint, he was a resident of Kumily and had enrolled in a laptop and mobile repair course at the institute. He was staying in a hostel with 13 other students across three rooms. During his stay, he noticed three students consuming ganja and informed the institute's faculty about the matter.

The faculty reportedly instructed him to record video evidence of the drug use. Acting on their directions, he filmed the activity and handed the clip to the officials. However, after summoning and questioning the accused students, the faculty took no disciplinary action and did not inform the police, effectively suppressing the issue.

Once the accused students discovered that the victim had reported them, they allegedly attacked him, causing severe injuries to his genitals. The student required medical treatment for the injuries sustained.

The incident came to light following widespread media coverage. Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala then directed the Idukki District Police Chief to take strict action. Acting on the directive, the police registered a case against the accused under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code (attempt to murder) and relevant provisions of the Anti-Ragging Act.

Students' Federation of India (SFI) activists staged a protest march to the institute, demanding strict action against the perpetrators. The protest lasted over two hours and was called off after authorities assured the demonstrators that appropriate measures would be taken against the offenders.

The case highlights the vulnerability of students who report wrongdoing in educational institutions. The Kerala Prohibition of Ragging Act, which is primarily intended to address ragging, also covers acts of intimidation or violence against students. Educational institutions are expected to report such matters to the police rather than handle them internally.

The police have not yet issued a detailed statement, and the accused have not been arrested so far. The investigation is ongoing. The institute has also not publicly responded to the allegations. The incident raises questions about institutional responsibility and the safety of students who come forward to report drug abuse or other violations.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.
