Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Surprise-Checks Women's Hospital, Orders Anti-Corruption Crackdown

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay made an unscheduled visit on Wednesday to the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (IOG) and Government Hospital for Women and Children in Egmore, Chennai.

At the century-old institution, Mr. Vijay toured the wards and intensive care unit, personally checking on the health of mothers receiving treatment. He also gathered their feedback on the quality of care and available facilities. During his rounds, the Chief Minister briefly held several newborn infants.

Health Minister K.G. Arunraj and Health Secretary Darez Ahamed accompanied Mr. Vijay, who inquired about the range of medical services provided at the hospital.

Speaking to reporters later, Dr. Arunraj revealed that the Chief Minister has directed officials to prepare a plan to upgrade the hospital into a comprehensive facility with modern amenities. The Minister also acknowledged complaints about staff demanding bribes to allow families to see newborns after delivery. He stated that strict orders have been issued to dismiss any employee found guilty of such misconduct. Citizens can report grievances through the 24-hour health helpline 104.
