Delhi H1N1 surge: hospitals see more patients, vulnerable groups at higher risk

With H1N1 cases rising in the national capital, outpatient departments (OPDs) at hospitals are witnessing an increased number of patients presenting symptoms of the viral infection. Doctors have said that while most healthy adults recover without complications, vulnerable groups—including the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing medical conditions—face a higher risk of developing serious complications.

According to health officials, some patients have required ventilator support due to respiratory complications. Delhi has recorded 1,777 cases of H1N1 this season, compared with 229 cases during the monsoon of 2025. The sharp increase has prompted hospitals to review their preparedness and response protocols.

Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh acknowledged the rise in cases but assured that hospitals are adequately prepared, with sufficient dedicated beds available. “Most people are recovering soon, and there is no immediate cause for concern,” he said, while advising the public to remain vigilant and follow preventive measures.

Government hospitals across Delhi have established dedicated intensive care units (ICUs) for H1N1 patients. Senior doctors have held meetings to discuss the surge, and separate wards are being set up to isolate patients for seven days. Dr. Ramesh Chand Meena, Associate Professor at the Department of Medicine at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, confirmed that while OPD visits have increased, no patient has yet required admission to the dedicated ICU section.

Dr. Atul Gogia, head of the infectious diseases unit at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, attributed the sudden surge to weather changes. “The weather conditions have become conducive to the survival and spread of respiratory viruses,” he explained. He outlined the primary symptoms: high fever, severe body ache, cold and cough, along with a mild reduction in white cell counts and platelets in some patients.

Dr. Vikas Mittal, director of pulmonology at CK Birla Hospital, said that most healthy individuals recover with rest, hydration, and symptomatic treatment. He stressed the importance of prevention, including annual influenza vaccination, hand hygiene, masking in crowded spaces, good ventilation, and staying home when symptomatic.

Health experts advise that individuals in high-risk categories should seek medical attention early if they develop flu-like symptoms. They also emphasize that while the current surge is concerning, the healthcare system has the capacity to manage the situation effectively. The public is encouraged to avoid panic and rely on verified information from official sources.

Supreme Court to FSSAI: Why take two more years for warning labels on packaged food?

The Supreme Court has questioned the FSSAI's proposal to take nearly two years to introduce front-of-pack warning labels on packaged foods high in sugar, salt and saturated fat. The regulator told the court it needs four months for consultations and a further year for industry to transition, but the Bench asked why it was restarting an exercise begun in 2022. The court reserved its order and said it would keep the matter pending to monitor compliance.
