Jipmer's Health Technology Hub Upgraded to Centre of Excellence

The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) has taken a significant step forward in the field of health technology assessment. Its Resource Hub for Health Technology Assessment (HTA) has been upgraded to become a Centre of Excellence for Health Technology Assessment, marking a major milestone for the institution.

According to an official release from the institute, the hub has so far completed 30 research studies, contributed to or organised 40 national and international capacity-building activities, and published 31 peer-reviewed articles in reputed journals. These accomplishments reflect the hub's growing role in evidence-based healthcare in India.

With the new status as a Centre of Excellence, Jipmer is expected to play an expanded role in strengthening health technology assessment across the country. The centre will provide technical leadership on advanced HTA methodologies, help develop and update national methodological standards, guidelines, and best practices, and support quality assurance mechanisms for HTA studies.

Health technology assessment is a systematic process used to evaluate the properties, effects, and impacts of health technologies, including medical devices, procedures, and pharmaceuticals. It helps policymakers, clinicians, and other stakeholders make informed decisions about the adoption and use of these technologies, ensuring that scarce healthcare resources are utilised effectively and safely.

As a Centre of Excellence, Jipmer will undertake specialised HTA studies, methodological research, and multicentric studies, thereby contributing to evidence generation for informed healthcare decision-making. The institute will also focus on capacity building, training professionals and researchers in this critical field to enhance the overall quality and reach of HTA in India.

This upgrade comes at a time when India is increasingly focusing on evidence-based healthcare and the efficient use of health resources. The designation of Jipmer as a Centre of Excellence is expected to further the country's efforts to integrate HTA into healthcare policy and practice, ultimately benefiting patients and the healthcare system as a whole.

The institute's commitment to research, innovation, and capacity building positions it as a key player in shaping the future of healthcare delivery in India.
