IIHM launches Egg Bank in Bengaluru to support child nutrition

The International Institute of Hotel Management (IIHM) has launched its first Egg Bank in India in Bengaluru, an initiative aimed at providing sustained nutritional support to children in need. The project was introduced in partnership with the Valmiki Foundation and is being led by IIHM students, who have been designated as 'food soldiers' for the cause.

As part of the launch, the Sri Rakum School for the Blind was identified as the first beneficiary institution. On the inaugural day, students distributed 700 eggs to visually-impaired children at the school. The selection of eggs as a nutritional resource is significant, given their high protein content and affordability, making them a practical intervention for addressing protein deficiency among vulnerable groups.

Dr. Suborno Bose, founder and chairman of IIHM, said in a statement: 'The student-led CSR initiative has been undertaken in association with Valmiki Foundation. IIHM will progressively extend the programme to old-age homes, orphanages, and other institutions serving underprivileged communities in Bengaluru.'

He further noted that the initiative would subsequently be replicated across IIHM campuses in India, with each campus identifying beneficiary institutions in its vicinity. This phased approach aims to ensure that the programme has a broad and sustainable impact, rather than remaining confined to a single city or institution.

The launch of the Egg Bank comes at a time when child malnutrition remains a pressing concern in India. According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), a significant proportion of children under five are undernourished, with inadequate protein intake being a contributing factor. While the Egg Bank is a modest step, it highlights the role that educational institutions and the hospitality sector can play in addressing community health challenges.

IIHM, which has multiple campuses across India, has positioned this as a student-driven social responsibility initiative. By involving students directly in the distribution and management of the programme, the institute aims to instil a sense of civic duty and practical compassion in its future hospitality professionals. The choice of the Sri Rakum School for the Blind as the first recipient also underscores a commitment to inclusivity and support for differently-abled children.

The programme is expected to expand in the coming months, with more institutions being added as beneficiaries. The institute has not yet specified a timeline for expansion beyond Bengaluru, but it has confirmed that the model will be adopted across its national network. Further details about the frequency of distribution and long-term funding mechanisms are yet to be disclosed.

This initiative, while small in scale, reflects a growing trend of corporate and institutional social responsibility programmes that target basic nutritional needs. Its success will depend on consistent execution and community participation, but it sets a precedent for how educational institutions can contribute to public welfare through focused, actionable projects.

The Supreme Court has questioned the FSSAI's proposal to take nearly two years to introduce front-of-pack warning labels on packaged foods high in sugar, salt and saturated fat. The regulator told the court it needs four months for consultations and a further year for industry to transition, but the Bench asked why it was restarting an exercise begun in 2022. The court reserved its order and said it would keep the matter pending to monitor compliance.
