Supreme Court Monitors Ram Mandir Fund Probe, Seeks Status Report in a Week

The Supreme Court of India has stepped in to oversee the investigation into the alleged embezzlement of funds collected for the construction of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. The court has directed the Uttar Pradesh government's Special Investigation Team (SIT) to submit a status report on the probe within a week.

The matter came before the court in response to multiple public interest litigations (PILs) seeking an independent and transparent investigation into the alleged misuse of donations. The petitioners have raised concerns about the handling of the funds, which were collected from devotees across the country for the temple's construction.

During the hearing, the Supreme Court bench emphasized the need for accountability and transparency in the management of public donations. The court noted that the investigation must be thorough and free from any external influence. The SIT has been asked to provide a detailed account of the progress made so far, including the status of the arrested individuals and the recovery of any misappropriated funds.

According to reports, the SIT has already arrested eight individuals in connection with the case. The arrests were made after preliminary investigations revealed suspicious transactions and irregularities in the collection and utilization of the funds. The accused are believed to have been involved in siphoning off money meant for the temple's construction.

The Supreme Court has scheduled the next hearing for July 20, by which time the SIT is expected to submit its status report. The court has also indicated that it may consider appointing an independent monitoring agency if the investigation is found to be lacking in any manner.

The Ram Mandir fund embezzlement case has drawn significant public attention, given the religious and cultural importance of the temple. The Supreme Court's intervention is seen as a step towards ensuring that the donations made in good faith by millions of devotees are used for their intended purpose. The court's directive underscores the principle of transparency and accountability in the management of public funds, especially those collected for religious and charitable causes.

The outcome of the investigation is likely to have broader implications for the governance of religious trusts and fundraising activities in India. The Supreme Court's monitoring of the probe sends a strong message about the importance of upholding the rule of law and protecting the interests of the public.

MHA defends anti-corruption bills: 'Not aimed at destabilising state governments'

The Union Home Ministry has defended its anti-corruption bills against opposition claims that they target non-BJP state governments. The MHA says the provisions remove from office only those under arrest for 30 days, while preserving legislative membership, and that the democratic mandate remains unaffected as the ruling party can appoint a replacement.
