Nepal Floods: 1,468 Missing, Hundreds of Foreigners Among Victims
More than 1,400 people are missing and at least 392 have been confirmed dead after flash floods and landslides struck the Nepal-Tibet border region. The disaster, triggered by torrential rains, has left a trail of destruction and a complex, evolving humanitarian crisis.
Officials caution that the figures are likely to change. In the chaotic aftermath of a major calamity, double-counting of dual nationals, mismatched identities, and incomplete communication often lead to fluctuating numbers in either direction.
Nepal's disaster agency reported that at least 1,468 people remain unaccounted for across the region. This includes 910 people missing inside Nepal, among them at least 517 foreigners. Across the border in Tibet, China has reported 558 people missing, including 260 foreign nationals. The combined total of 1,468 does not represent a single official list but a compilation from both sides of the border.
The Nepal Tourism Board, which tracks visitors, issued a separate breakdown on Thursday, listing 667 missing tourists and travellers, both Nepali and foreign. Of these, 127 are Nepali citizens. The Board's figures often differ from those provided by foreign governments, reflecting the difficulty of verification during an ongoing emergency.
Among the worst affected nationalities, India accounts for the highest number of missing foreigners, with 178 people unaccounted for according to the tourism board. An additional 11 Indians have been rescued. The United States has confirmed 90 of its citizens missing, with three rescued and no fatalities reported so far. Nepal's tourism board, however, lists 65 Americans among the missing.
Ukraine's foreign ministry has reported 56 Ukrainians out of contact, while clarifying that no Ukrainians are among the injured or dead. Malaysia's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said more than 50 Malaysians in Nepal are unreachable, a figure echoed by the tourism board at 51. Australia has confirmed 39 nationals missing, according to Foreign Minister Penny Wong, with the number expected to rise as assessments continue.
Thirty-three British citizens are listed as missing by Nepal's tourism board. Canada's government is aware of 30 Canadians and permanent residents in Nepal and Tibet whose whereabouts remain unconfirmed, though the tourism board puts the figure at 25. South Korea reported nine hydropower workers missing in Rasuwa district, while four South Koreans have been rescued. Singapore has nine citizens unaccounted for, Germany eight, and Russia eight, with two Russians rescued.
Smaller numbers of missing have been reported by several other countries. South Africa has six nationals missing, Latvia six, Japan five, New Zealand five, France four, and Spain four according to its foreign ministry, though Nepal's tourism board says three. Belgium has three, Hungary three, Portugal three, the Netherlands two, and Italy three missing, with two Italians rescued.
The disaster has drawn global attention to the vulnerability of mountainous regions to climate-induced extreme weather. Rescue and relief operations are underway, but remote terrain and damaged infrastructure are hampering efforts. As the search continues, authorities on both sides of the border are working to reconcile multiple lists to provide accurate information to families and governments.
For now, the human toll remains staggering, and the wait for answers continues for thousands of families around the world.
