South Korea fires warning shots after North Korean troops cross demarcation line

South Korea's military said on Sunday that it fired warning shots after North Korean soldiers briefly crossed the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) in the eastern section of the border. The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said the troops returned after the warning shots were fired.

The JCS statement said, "Recently, on the Eastern Front, North Korean forces crossed the military demarcation line, prompting our military to fire warning shots according to operational procedures." The statement did not specify the exact date of the incident but added that the military is "closely monitoring North Korean movements while maintaining a firm military readiness posture."

The Yonhap news agency had earlier reported, citing an unnamed source, that warning shots were fired last week. Yonhap said this was the first reported violation of the MDL by North Korea this year, and that the soldiers were likely patrolling the area when they crossed.

The MDL is the de facto border between the two Koreas, running through the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). The two countries remain technically at war, as the 1950-53 Korean War ended with an armistice rather than a peace treaty. The DMZ is heavily fortified, and incursions, while not rare, are taken seriously by both sides.

According to Yonhap, North Korean troops violated the MDL 17 times last year. The reasons for such crossings are often unclear, with some attributed to patrols or navigation errors. In several past instances, North Korean soldiers have crossed the line and then returned after warning shots or broadcasts.

The North Korean embassy in Singapore did not respond immediately to a request for comment. The incident highlights the fragile state of inter-Korean relations, which have seen little diplomatic progress in recent years. The JCS reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining security and readiness along the border.

Observers note that while such incidents are not unprecedented, they underscore the persistent tensions in the region. The United Nations Command, which oversees the armistice, has procedures for reporting and addressing MDL violations. South Korea's military said it is closely coordinating with relevant authorities to prevent any escalation.
