Shivamogga Faces 55% Rain Deficit: Sowing Hit, Reservoir Inflows Low

Shivamogga district has recorded a 55 per cent deficit in rainfall since June 1, leading to delayed sowing and reduced inflows into reservoirs, Deputy Commissioner Prabhulinga Kavalikatti said on Friday.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Kavalikatti stated that only 13 per cent of the district's agricultural area has been covered under sowing so far. Farmers have postponed planting due to insufficient rainfall, but he noted that there is still time until the end of August for paddy cultivation. “We are hopeful of improvement in sowing coverage in the coming days,” he added.

The Deputy Commissioner explained that the rainfall deficit has resulted in inadequate water inflow into dams, making it unlikely that farmers can expect water releases for irrigation. However, the available storage is sufficient to meet drinking water requirements. “As of now, there is no problem with the supply of drinking water in the district, except in three villages in Tirthahalli taluk, where tankers have been deployed,” he said.

Responding to a query about rain gauges, Mr. Kavalikatti revealed that out of 280 installed rain gauges, 208 were non-functional. After the matter was reported to the Disaster Management Cell, steps were taken to replace the faulty gauges. “I have enquired with the officers concerned. The replacement of the faulty machines will be completed within a week. The cell has assigned a private agency for maintenance of the gauges for the next three years,” he said.

Last year, areca growers had complained that faulty rain gauge readings led to denial of crop insurance claims. The Deputy Commissioner said the replacement of these gauges is now underway to address such issues.
