SFI Alleges Police Misconduct During NEET Protest in Chennai
The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) has accused the police of using excessive force against its members during a protest against the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) in Chennai on Wednesday. The organization claimed that one protester suffered a dislocated shoulder and that women members were handled inappropriately by male personnel.
The SFI had announced a march to the Lok Bhavan demanding the scrapping of NEET. According to the group, an agreement with police allowed them to assemble near the Rajiv Gandhi statue at Chinnamalai. However, they said that when a bus carrying members reached the Saidapet court complex, police stopped the vehicle and attempted to arrest protesters as they disembarked.
The SFI also alleged that several police officers involved did not wear name badges, violating norms. They called for departmental action against the personnel responsible. SFI state president C. Mridula and secretary Thou. Samsheer Ahmed urged authorities to investigate.
NEET, the medical entrance exam, has been a subject of controversy, with some student groups arguing it disadvantages rural and underprivileged students. The police have not yet issued a statement on the incident.
