Rajasthan Launches 'Khushishala' Mental Health Programme in 1,500 Primary Schools
The Rajasthan government has introduced a structured mental health and well-being programme in primary education with the launch of the 'Khushishala' initiative in around 1,500 government schools across the state.
State officials claim that Rajasthan is the first in the country to launch such a comprehensive programme targeting students from Classes 1 to 5. The initiative, implemented by the Rajasthan State Council of Educational Research and Training (RSCERT), focuses on emotional well-being, social development, and life skills through activity-based learning.
RSCERT Director Shweta Fagediya said the programme includes mental health and capacity-building training for teachers, enabling them to better understand and address children's emotional needs. Activities are designed to be age-appropriate and integrate into the existing curriculum.
The initiative also involves mentorship from accomplished athletes and guidance from alumni who have experience in professional sports, though details on how these mentors will engage with primary school students have not been fully outlined. The programme aims to create a supportive environment where children can express themselves and develop resilience.
Teachers will receive training to identify early signs of emotional distress and provide basic support. The state government has allocated resources for training materials and activity kits. Further expansion to additional schools is expected based on initial outcomes.
This move comes amid growing recognition of the importance of mental health in early childhood education. Experts note that addressing emotional well-being at a young age can have long-term benefits for academic performance and social adjustment.
