India's Cochin Shipyard Delivers Second Ice-Class Vessel to Germany's HS Schiffahrts
Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), India's largest shipbuilding and repair facility, on Wednesday delivered MS Maria, the second of eight HS EcoFreighter series multi-purpose vessels (MPVs), to HS Schiffahrts UG (haftungsbeschränkt) & Co. KG, a Germany-based shipping company. The delivery marks another milestone in the ongoing partnership between the Indian shipyard and European shipping firms.
The vessel, designed by Groot Ship Design of the Netherlands and constructed at CSL's Kochi yard, is an ice-class ship with a deadweight of 7,000 tonnes. It is capable of carrying a wide range of cargo including project cargo, heavy cargo, steel coils, containers, timber, paper, dry bulk commodities such as coal and grain, and dangerous goods. This versatility makes it suitable for worldwide trade routes, including those in colder regions where ice-class certification is necessary.
The MPV features a single large cargo hold equipped with six movable panels. These panels allow for flexible cargo configurations, including grain bulkheads at multiple positions and a between-deck arrangement. This design enhances the vessel's efficiency in handling diverse cargo types without compromising safety or stability.
Propulsion is provided by a medium-speed four-stroke diesel engine that drives a controllable pitch propeller through a reduction gearbox. This setup ensures reliable performance and fuel efficiency, which are critical for commercial shipping operations.
The delivery and acceptance protocol was signed by S. Harikrishnan, Director (Operations) of CSL, and Heinz Josef Schepers, Director of HS Schiffahrts. The signing ceremony took place at the shipyard's premises, marking the formal handover of the vessel to the German owners.
This delivery is part of a series of eight vessels ordered by HS Schiffahrts. The first vessel was delivered earlier, and the remaining six are expected to be handed over in phases. The order underscores the confidence that European shipping companies have in Indian shipbuilding capabilities, particularly in the niche segment of ice-class multi-purpose vessels.
Cochin Shipyard has been expanding its footprint in the global shipbuilding market. With this delivery, the yard continues to demonstrate its ability to construct technically advanced vessels that meet stringent international standards. The success also highlights India's growing role in the global maritime industry, offering a competitive alternative to traditional shipbuilding nations.
The MS Maria is expected to be deployed on international trade routes soon, servicing clients across Europe, Asia, and other regions. CSL officials stated that the timely delivery reflects the yard's commitment to quality and schedule, which could pave the way for more such orders in the future.
