US Court Drops Adani Charges; Political Row Intensifies in India
The United States federal court has formally dismissed criminal charges against Gautam Adani, chairman of the Adani Group, his nephew Sagar Adani, and Vneet Jaain, former CEO of Adani Green Energy. The decision brings to a close a legal proceeding that had cast a prolonged shadow over one of India's most influential business conglomerates.
The charges originated from an indictment filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. U.S. prosecutors alleged that the three executives conspired to pay bribes to Indian government officials to secure favourable terms for solar energy contracts. According to the indictment, the Adani Group and its associates agreed to pay over $250 million in bribes to expedite power purchase agreements with state electricity distribution companies. The defendants were also accused of concealing the bribery scheme from U.S. investors while raising billions of dollars from American financial institutions, in violation of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.
Prosecutors brought the case based on evidence gathered through a joint investigation, including testimony from a cooperating witness who claimed to have been directly involved in the alleged bribery. The charges were seen as a significant escalation in the U.S. government's efforts to enforce anti-corruption laws overseas.

Rahul Gandhi, a senior leader of the Indian National Congress and a long-time critic of the Adani Group, launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Gandhi alleged that the U.S. decision was a result of political influence wielded by the Modi government to protect its business ally. He claimed that the dismissal was 'a global cover-up' and demanded a parliamentary inquiry into the Adani Group's dealings in India. Gandhi also renewed his accusations of crony capitalism, asserting that the Prime Minister's silence on the matter was telling.
The Adani Group, however, has repeatedly rejected such allegations, stating that they are politically motivated attempts to damage its reputation. The group's market shares have seen volatility in response to the news, but analysts say the dismissal removes a significant legal overhang for the conglomerate.
While the U.S. criminal case has ended, the Adani Group may still face other legal hurdles. A related civil case brought by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission remains pending, and the company has denied any wrongdoing in that matter as well. In India, opposition parties have vowed to keep the issue alive in Parliament, raising questions about transparency and corporate governance.
