Petronet LNG Revenue Halves as West Asia Conflict Disrupts Imports, Profit Rises 33%

Petronet LNG, India's leading importer of liquefied natural gas, reported a 52.3% decline in standalone revenue for the April-June quarter, as ongoing West Asia tensions continued to disrupt supplies. The company's revenue fell to ₹5,788 crore from the corresponding period last year, a sharp downturn driven by geopolitical instability in a region critical to India's energy needs.

Despite the slump in top line, Petronet LNG posted a 33.2% surge in net profit to ₹1,132 crore for the quarter. The profit increase, even amid falling revenues, points to improved cost management and possibly higher margins on existing contracts, though the overall volume of operations remained under pressure.

West Asia has long been a vital source of LNG for India. Before the conflict broke out, Qatar alone accounted for approximately 47% of India's LNG imports. The region's instability has repeatedly risked shipping routes and supply chains, forcing Indian buyers to scramble for alternative cargoes, often at unpredictable prices. The April-June quarter reflected the cumulative impact of these disruptions on a major importer like Petronet LNG, which operates import terminals at Dahej in Gujarat and Kochi in Kerala.

The revenue decline is a stark reminder of India's vulnerability to external shocks in its energy sector. As the country seeks to expand natural gas usage to 15% of its primary energy mix by 2030, from the current 6%, ensuring reliable and affordable LNG imports is a priority. The West Asia crisis has exposed the risks of over-dependence on a single region, prompting discussions on diversifying sources and investing in domestic production.

Petronet LNG's financial performance in this quarter also needs to be viewed against the backdrop of global LNG prices, which have softened from the peaks seen in 2022. Lower spot prices may have helped the company's profitability on term contracts, while the reduced revenue could be due to lower volumes or renegotiated prices amid supply constraints. The company, however, has not provided detailed volume data in its public disclosures for the quarter.

Industry experts suggest that the profit surge, despite lower revenue, indicates that Petronet LNG has successfully navigated some of the immediate supply hurdles, perhaps through diversified sourcing and tactical use of its storage and regasification capacity. Yet, the persistent conflict in West Asia remains a structural challenge. Any escalation could further tighten the LNG market, impacting not just Petronet LNG but the broader Indian economy, which relies on natural gas for fertiliser, power generation, and city gas distribution.

The Indian government has been proactive in mitigating these risks by encouraging imports from other regions, including the United States, Australia, and Africa. Long-term contracts with these suppliers are being negotiated, and the expansion of renewable energy is also a priority. However, natural gas is expected to play a crucial bridging role in India's energy transition, making the reliability of imports essential.

For Petronet LNG, the immediate outlook remains uncertain. The company is likely to continue facing headwinds if West Asia tensions persist. Nonetheless, its robust profit growth suggests a degree of resilience. Investors and policymakers will be watching closely to see if the company can sustain profitability while navigating one of the most challenging geopolitical environments for global energy markets in recent years.
