Railway bridge collapses in Assam after heavy rainfall, train services suspended
Heavy rainfall in parts of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh has led to the collapse of a portion of a railway bridge in Assam's Dhemaji district, disrupting train services in the region.
The bridge, located on a low-traffic branch line between Murkongselek and Silapathar under the Tinsukia division of Northeast Frontier Railways, gave way after river waters rose due to rainfall exceeding 110 mm in 24 hours.
A Northeast Frontier Railways official stated that the bridge, constructed in 1965 and later converted to broad gauge, was in good and safe condition. However, the river bank was washed away during the heavy rains, causing one of the piers to become unstable. No train was damaged and no injuries were reported. Train operations had already been suspended prior to the collapse due to heavy flooding of the river.
The collapse has led to the suspension of train services on the affected section until further notice. Authorities are assessing the damage and planning repairs.
