Pondicherry University Calls for Dialogue as Student Protests Intensify
Pondicherry University has appealed to students to engage in constructive dialogue as an indefinite sit-in protest by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) continues on the campus. The protest, which began on Friday, August 21, 2026, seeks to draw attention to what the student group describes as mismanagement by the university administration.
The ABVP has alleged that the university spent crores of rupees on renovating an office cabin for staff, while neglecting basic student needs such as drinking water supply, hostel facilities, sports infrastructure, and transportation. The organisation has also demanded a probe by the Ministry of Education into the renovation expenditure.
In a press release, the university said that students' genuine and legitimate concerns are periodically reviewed by the Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Dean and Deputy Deans of Students' Welfare, Security Advisor, and other officials. However, it noted that a group of students is indulging in protest and making what it called unsubstantiated allegations against the institution.
The university expressed concern that such protests not only harm the peaceful environment of the campus but also adversely affect its reputation. It said the Registrar, Dean of Students' Welfare, and Security Advisor have already interacted with the agitating students and heard their concerns.
Emphasising that dialogue is an important and constructive means of maintaining mutual understanding, the university urged students to cooperate in resolving issues in the best interests of both students and the institution. It also appealed to students to refrain from tarnishing the university's image on social media platforms.
The situation remains tense as both sides await further developments. Students have not indicated any immediate plan to call off the protest, and the university has not withdrawn its appeal for dialogue.
