PM Modi Begins Two-Day West Bengal Visit for State Day and Yoga Day Events
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to arrive in West Bengal on Saturday, June 20, 2026, for a two-day visit. He will participate in events marking Paschim Banga Dibas (West Bengal Day) and the International Day of Yoga, according to official announcements.
In a social media post, the Prime Minister confirmed his presence, stating: 'I will be present in West Bengal for various programmes in the next two days, the 20th and 21st. Tomorrow, the 20th of June, is particularly noteworthy because it marks the observance of our West Bengal Day.' The event for West Bengal Day will be held in Tarakeswar, Hooghly district, a location associated with Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee.
The observance of June 20 as Paschim Banga Dibas was instituted by the Bharatiya Janata Party government after it came to power. This date commemorates the proposal moved by Syama Prasad Mookerjee in the Bengal Legislative Assembly on June 20, 1947, which led to the partition of Bengal. The BJP has described this as paving the way for a 'homeland for Hindus of Bengal.' Previously, during the Trinamool Congress government, Poila Baisakh (the Bengali New Year) was observed as Paschim Banga Dibas.
On Sunday, June 21, the Prime Minister will attend the 12th International Day of Yoga celebration in Kolkata, scheduled for 6:30 a.m. at Red Road. Preparations have been underway for a week, with traffic diversions in place. West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said 35,000 people are expected to participate.
Later on Sunday, Mr. Modi will commission three indigenously built naval ships — INS Dunagiri, INS Sanshodhak, and INS Agray — at the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata. This marks his second visit to West Bengal since the BJP came to power; his first was for the swearing-in ceremony of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and five other cabinet ministers on May 9 at Kolkata's Brigade Parade Grounds.
